The legal framework relating to protection of river biodiversity are very limited under the environmental jurisprudence in India. Many legislations such as the River Boards Act of 1956, the Water Pollution and Control of Pollution Act of 1974, and the State and Central Pollution Control Board now become inadequate and need to be amended according to the changing and complex need of the society and also for the better protection of the biodiversity.
