This book has its origins in a systematic academic research study undertaken at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University of Social Sciences (BRAUSS), Madhya Pradesh, under the guidance of eminent scholars in the field of Social Work and Sociology. The study was conducted in two districts of Madhya Pradesh — Agar Malwa and Ujjain — areas representative of the broader rural landscape of Central India, where a large proportion of youth participate in government-sponsored skill development programs such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). Several interweaving themes run through the fabric of this work. First, it highlights the critical link between skill development and socio-economic mobility — demonstrating how targeted training can raise confidence levels, improve income, and enhance social standing, particularly for youth from marginalised communities. Second, it draws attention to the structural barriers that impede rural youth from fully benefiting from skill development programs: inadequate infrastructure, geographic isolation, caste-based discrimination, financial constraints, and a persistent dearth of career guidance and mentorship. Third, the book examines the quality and relevance of existing training programs, scrutinising the competence of trainers, the adequacy of practical instruction, and the responsiveness of training content to market demands. Finally, it investigates post-training placement realities, exploring whether skill programs translate into meaningful employment and livelihood opportunities or whether they remain exercises in certification without economic substance.
