This book, Voices from the Margins: Understanding Tribes in Contemporary India, is the outcome of my years of engagement with the diverse worlds of India’s tribal communities since last five decades. It has been written with the conviction that understanding tribal life is essential not only for appreciating India’s cultural richness, but also for addressing some of the most pressing questions of justice, development, and democracy. In my opinion it is the time to review the present scenario of tribal world in the context of latest march of time. The title of this book reflects its guiding philosophy: to bring forward the voices of those who have historically been marginalized—tribal communities whose identities, rights, and knowledge systems are too often overlooked. While “tribal issues” are frequently discussed in policy and academia, the perspectives of the tribes themselves rarely receive adequate attention. This work attempts to bridge that gap.
